How to Decorate a Christmas Tree in 5 Steps
Step 1: Choose the Perfect Tree
Decide between a natural or artificial tree, keeping your space and needs in mind. For artificial trees, fluffing is non-negotiable. Spread and fan out each branch to create a full, natural look. I know fluffing can be tedious but it’s a necessary step. Use dishwashing gloves to protect your hands during fluffing—it makes a huge difference!
The Christmas tree pictured above is my 7ft dining room tree and is gorgeous in person! It’s nice and full and great for smaller spaces. You can find it here.
Pro Tip: Consider your tree’s height and width to ensure it fits your space perfectly. If you’re working with a smaller room, a slim tree can still look grand with the right decorations.

Step 2: Add Lights
Lights set the mood, so choose wisely! Whether you prefer warm white, colorful, or twinkle lights, ensure you layer them evenly.
- Pro Tip: Start at the base and work your way up, weaving the lights in and out of each branch for depth. For added sparkle, layer a set of twinkle lights over steady ones.
- Use 100 lights per foot of tree height for a balanced glow. To avoid tangles next year, you can wrap lights around a piece of cardboard when packing them away!

Step 3: Ribbon or Garland
Wired ribbon is a game-changer—it’s easy to shape and holds its form. Layer ribbons diagonally, or tuck them in and out of the branches for a cascading effect. For garlands, drape them loosely for a touch of elegance.
Pro Tip: Mix textures by pairing velvet ribbons with metallic garlands to add depth and variety.

Step 4: Ornaments & Picks
Ornaments are your chance to show off your personality! Use a mix of sizes, textures, and finishes for a professional look.
Picks and Sprays: Add decorative picks like berries, snowflakes, or frosted branches to fill gaps and create a polished finish.
Pro Tip: Group ornaments in sets of three for an effortlessly stylish look. Play around with different textures like matte, shiny, and glittery finishes to give your tree some extra flair. Mixing up the sizes keeps things interesting—use bigger ornaments to anchor the design and smaller ones to fill in the gaps. This simple trick adds depth and makes your tree look beautifully put together without much effort!
Step 5: Picking Your Base & Tree Topper
The tree’s base and topper tie everything together. Whether it’s a classic tree skirt, a tree collar, or even a cozy throw blanket, the base should complement the tree’s style.
Pro Tip: Use a statement topper like an oversized bow, star, or even cascading ribbons to draw the eye upward.
Bonus Tips:
Add Scent: If you’re using an artificial tree, hang scented ornaments or place pine-scented sachets nearby for that authentic holiday smell.
Theme It Out: Choose a theme, like rustic farmhouse, glam metallics, or traditional reds and greens, to keep the tree looking cohesive.
Layer Textures: Mix matte, shiny, and glittered ornaments for visual interest.
Create Balance: Distribute colors and ornaments evenly around the tree for a harmonious look.
With these tips and tricks, decorating your Christmas tree will be fun, easy, and result in a show-stopping centerpiece for your home. Happy decorating! 🎄
