I’ve hosted everything from casual backyard hangouts to holiday dinners with a dozen people squeezed around the table—and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that having the right essentials on hand makes a huge difference. You don’t need to go over the top or buy a ton of stuff, but a few thoughtful pieces can make hosting feel a whole lot less stressful (and way more fun).

This list includes all my go-to hosting must-haves—the items I rely on to keep things running smoothly and help guests feel welcome. Whether you’re throwing a birthday party, planning a cozy dinner, or just love having friends over, these are the hosting essentials that make it all easier.

The most common question is: Can artificial plants be used outside? The answer is yes! As long as you have high-quality artificial plants specifically designed to withstand outdoor conditions, you can use them outdoors without any problems. Fortunately, there are many great options available now, including UV-resistant flowers, in different price ranges.

Make an Easy Outdoor Planter with Artificial Plants

1. Choose High-Quality Artificial Flowers

Not all artificial flowers are created equal. Make sure to choose UV-resistant artificial flowers and foliage when creating an outdoor arrangement. UV-resistant options are for outdoor use and will better withstand outdoor conditions. They will also look more convincing and maintain their color and shape better over time.

I tried growing lavender in my garden this year, and unfortunately, did not succeed. The vision I had was a planter full of lavender, and when that wasn’t going to happen, I went online and ended up finding these faux lavender stems on Amazon!

2. Create a Balanced Arrangement

The beautiful thing about a DIY project is that you can customize everything to your liking. You can mix different types of artificial flowers and greenery to achieve the look you want. In my case, I wanted nothing but lavender, but you can use a variety of colors, heights, and textures to create the perfect arrangement for you. Place taller flowers in the center or back, medium-height flowers around them, and trailing greenery or smaller blooms around the edges for the perfect balance.

3. Use a Sturdy Base and Anchoring

Fill the bottom of your planter with foam blocks, floral foam, or floral wire to anchor the stems securely, which is what I did. You can also use rocks or sand for added weight to prevent the planter from tipping over. Make sure the planters are sturdy so the wind won’t tip them over.

4. Blend with Real Elements

For an even more realistic look, you can mix in twigs, moss, or even small stones. These natural elements can help blend the artificial flowers seamlessly with the outdoor environment, making the arrangement appear more authentic.

5. Regular Maintenance and Cleaning

Even though artificial flowers require little upkeep, they still need occasional maintenance. Clean the flowers regularly to remove dust and dirt. You can clean them using a soft brush or by gently spraying them down with a hose.

Additional Tip: Consider Seasons

Switch out the flowers and foliage to reflect different seasons. For example, use bright and colorful flowers for summer, warm tones for autumn, and winter greens with artificial berries for the colder months. This will keep your outdoor space looking vibrant and up-to-date throughout the year!

Let’s be honest clutter can be very overwhelming. A clutter-free home will not only positively boost your mood it will also give you a sense of peace like no other. 

I know decluttering may seem very stressful, and honestly, it is sometimes. The thing about decluttering (and it took me some time to figure this out) is it doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t rush the process. The trick to decluttering is to break into digestible “chunks” to avoid feeling overwhelmed and wanting to give up. 

I started decluttering back in 2021 and I’m the kind of person who wants things to happen fast. Like, insanely fast. I would try to declutter my entire house in one day and guess what? It wouldn’t happen. At the end of the day, I’d be irritated, and grumpy, and there was a mess left behind, making me even more irritated. You see the vicious cycle I was in? So, learn from my mistakes, and don’t try to declutter your home in one day.

Instead, follow my decluttering checklist to make it easier on yourself. Also, one important reminder: be patient and give yourself grace. We all have a lot of things going on during the day, and there are days when you won’t have the time or energy to tackle a space. That’s normal. Just pick up where you left off and continue on your decluttering journey. 

Decluttering tips to keep in mind before you begin… 

Set a realistic goal

Wanting to declutter your entire home in a day is not doable. Remember the clutter didn’t happen in one day; it accumulated gradually over time. Instead, focus on making steady progress by tackling one room or area at a time. Set realistic goals and prioritize the areas that need the most attention. 

Schedule it

Don’t leave decluttering to chance. When you’re planning out your week, designate a day and time to do some decluttering. I used to rely on a mental checklist for my to-dos, but as my family has grown and my responsibilities have increased, keeping track mentally is no longer realistic.

Do it little by little

Do a little every day. Break up the process into manageable tasks and spread them out over time. This way, you’ll avoid feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. Decluttering is a journey, not a race. Take your time, stay consistent, and celebrate each small win along the way. You got this! 

Simple Room-By-Room Decluttering Checklist 

TIP: Looking at a long checklist can be overwhelming. Instead, break it down into smaller easy-to-do sections. For example, if you want to start by decluttering your kitchen, start with the junk drawer or pantry. Once completed, move on to the next category or area.  

Kitchen Decluttering Checklist:

• Expired spices and pantry items 
• Stained food storage containers
• Storage containers with missing lids
• Excessive mugs 
• Extra plates 
• Appliances you no longer use
• Extra or unused bakeware 
• Expired vitamins/medicines

Because it’s kinda like hitting the reset button before you start adding stuff you might not even need. We all know how quickly clutter can pile up and take over, right? So, before you dive into any decorating, take some time and tidy things up a bit. Get rid of anything you don’t use or need anymore. Trust the process. You’ll thank yourself later. 

Calm Color Scheme

Your bedroom should feel calm and soothing. It’s your place of rest and using calming colors will create a peaceful atmosphere. Gentle colors, soft neutrals like creamy whites, or a muted blue is a good choice that will give you a serene space. 

Furniture Layout

When planning out your furniture layout, think about what pieces you’re bringing into your bedroom and plan accordingly. A good way to position your bed is in the center of the room or against the longest wall. If you’re placing your bed in the center of the room, you’ll want to have two nightstands. Having a nightstand on each side will give the space balance and symmetry. Then, add in other pieces like your dresser, making sure you have ample room to move around and open drawers.

Create a Cozy Sitting Area

If you’ve got the space, adding a cozy sitting area can really elevate your relaxation game. Choose a comfy chair or loveseat, toss in a throw blanket, and voilà – you’ve got the perfect spot to curl up with a book or unwind with a cup of tea.

The bulbs you use are equally important; stay away from cool white light bulbs. This color temperature is commonly found in office buildings, giving off a very cold and uninviting feel. Opt for warm white, around 3000k (kelvin). Remember, the higher the kelvin, the colder the light will be. I prefer buying my light bulbs from Amazon because they offer a wide range of options, and you can practically find any size bulb you need.

Pillows and Blankets

Pillows and soft blankets automatically make you feel cozy. You don’t need to have a ton of throw pillows on your couch to achieve coziness. Choose fabrics that are soft to the touch and incorporate throw blankets that will make you want to reach for them every time you sit and relax on your couch. I prefer purchasing a pillow insert and a pillow cover, which eliminates the need to store an excess of throw pillows.

Plants

Add life to the space with plants! Plants instantly make a space cozy because they are living things. Another plus to adding plants is the opportunity to accessorize the space with beautiful pots and planters, adding yet another layer of coziness. Consider fresh flowers as well – while they can get costly, you can divide one bouquet and use a few vases to spread them around.
